PEARLS
NIWAKA Pearl Evaluation
For the SHIROSUMIKA collection, NIWAKA uses high-quality Akoya pearls that require no color treatment. In order to carefully select extraordinary pearls, NIWAKA has established its own strict and objective evaluation criteria for a rigorous assessment of each pearl based on color, luster, surface quality, size and shape. After stringent examination, NIWAKA pearls are classified into five grades: Special, Special+, Superior, Superior+ and Superior++.
Special Grade
These pearls have an exquisite white hue that gives an impression of clarity and depth with a soft, translucent glow. They require no color treatment and are characterized by a high ranking in every category of NIWAKA’s pearl evaluation.
Special+ Grade
This grade is assigned to the small percentage of pearls that exhibit very subtle pink overtones without any additional color treatment. These pearls have a high ranking in every category of NIWAKA’s pearl evaluation, and the rare coloring makes them even more precious.
Superior / Superior+ / Superior++ Grades
These magnificent pearls are of the highest quality, selected for their extraordinary beauty and rarity. Every pearl in the three Superior grades has a slightly pink hue, a particularly elegant shimmer and a powerful presence. These extremely rare treasures account for only 0.002% of pearls cultivated in Japan.
Pearl Size
Our pearls are available in four sizes: 7.0 mm, 7.5 mm, 8.0 mm and 8.5 mm. Larger Akoya pearls are rarer and therefore more valuable.
(Depending on the item, certain pearl sizes may not be available.)
